WATOについて、はじまりのこと。
輪島塗を「巡らせる」プロジェクト、WATO -輪と- をスタートしました。
幼い頃から、輪島は身近な場所でした。石川で生まれ育ち、親戚がいて、よく訪れていた。輪島塗もそれと同じように、生活の中にごく自然にあったものでした。
輪島塗は、石川県輪島市に伝わる漆器の産地として、400年以上の歴史を持ちます。木地に漆を何十回と塗り重ね、研ぎ、また塗る。その工程は百を超えるとも言われ、一つの器が完成するまでに多くの職人の手が関わります。丈夫さと美しさを兼ね備えたその漆器は、かつて日本中の食卓に当たり前のように存在していました。しかし時代とともに、輪島塗は「特別なもの」「保存するもの」へとその位置づけが変わっていきました。
そうして大切にしまわれたまま、次の使い手を待っている輪島塗が、今もたくさんあります。WATOは、そこに目を向けるプロジェクトです。
WATOがやっていきたいこと
私たちが目指すのは、伝統の「保存」ではなく「更新」です。先人から受け継がれた輪島塗に新しい文脈を添え、今のライフスタイルへと再接続すること。

まず取り組むのは、輪島塗の丁寧なセレクションと販売です。産地の歴史を背負った逸品を一点ずつ選び、その背景にある物語と共に次の使い手へと繋いでいきます。長い年月を経て刻まれた傷や、使い込まれた艶。それらは欠損ではなく、愛されてきた証である「経年変化（パティナ）」という名の魅力です。一点一点が持つ唯一無二の表情を、あなたの日常に。
UPDATE CONTEXT / 使い方の更新
販売だけにとどまりません。アーティストとのコラボレーションを通して、既存の枠にとらわれない、漆器の新しい「居場所」を提案していきます。茶道具として、インテリアオブジェとして、あるいはまったく別の何かとして。輪島塗が持つ可能性を、新しい文脈で問い直していきます。
CIRCLE COMMUNITY / コミュニティー作り
漆器を愛でる人、まだ輪島塗を知らない人、そして表現者たちが交差する場を作っていきたいと思っています。輪島塗の美しさを次世代へと繋いでいくために、実際に手に触れたり、空間と共にある体験ができるような場づくりも、少しずつ進めていく予定です。

About WATO — Where It Began.
We started WATO — a project dedicated to giving Wajima lacquerware a new life.
Wajima has always been close to us. Growing up in Ishikawa, with family ties to the region, Wajima lacquerware was simply a part of everyday life — nothing extraordinary, just present. That familiarity stayed with us.
Wajima lacquerware has a history spanning more than 400 years, rooted in Wajima City on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture. Each piece is the result of a painstaking process — layers of lacquer applied, dried, polished, and applied again, through more than a hundred individual steps, each handled by craftspeople with distinct expertise. Durable, beautiful, and made to be used, Wajima lacquerware was once a fixture of everyday life across Japan. Over time, however, it came to be seen as something precious, something to be stored away rather than touched.
And so, carefully wrapped and set aside, countless pieces have been waiting — for the next person, the next moment, the next life. WATO begins there.
What WATO Wants to Do
What we're after is not preservation, but renewal — adding new context to lacquerware passed down through generations, and reconnecting it to the way people live today.
CURATION & SALES
We start by carefully selecting and selling pieces with genuine history. Each one is chosen for the story it carries, and passed on to the next person who will value it. The scratches worn into the surface over decades, the deepened sheen of something truly used — these are not flaws. They are patina: evidence of a life well-lived. We call it the beauty of time.
UPDATE CONTEXT
Beyond selling, we want to explore new possibilities for these objects. Through collaborations with artists and creators, we hope to propose new contexts for lacquerware — freed from the roles it has traditionally occupied. As an object of daily use, a piece of interior design, or something else entirely. We want to ask, again, what Wajima lacquerware can be.
CIRCLE COMMUNITY
We want to create a place where people who already love lacquerware, people who have never encountered it, and creative practitioners can all come together. A space to hold these objects, to live alongside them, and to carry the beauty of Wajima lacquerware into the next generation.
Old vessels, given new purpose.
Japanese craft carries centuries of intention. We hope WATO can be one small way for people around the world to find their way into that world. We hope you'll follow along.
